Creating a Bootable ESXi USB Stick on Mac OS X

I recently found myself with a decent HP DL385 G2 server with no hard drives (it used to have hard drives, but now it doesn’t…there’s a long story behind it that I won’t get into here). So, I decided I’d try creating a bootable ESXi USB flash drive to use with the server. There are lots of guides out there for creating bootable ESXi USB flash drives, but none of them were written for users, like myself, who use Mac OS X.

Riding the downturn: Network vendors eye new markets in ’09

Today's rough economy hasn't put the breaks on vendor ambition. Microsoft, Cisco, HP, VMware, Juniper and Avaya have big plans for 2009.Today's rough economy hasn't put the breaks on vendor ambition.

Microsoft aims to become a dominant player in hosted software and cloud computing in 2009, despite its late entry in these markets. Ditto for Microsoft in the virtualization arena — where early arrival VMware has some lofty goals of its own, including shooting for a bigger role in data center management.

Vizioncore announced that vRanger Pro 3.2.8, the latest version of its backup and restore solution, will provide full support for VMware ESXi 3.5. VMware ESXi 3.5 provides a thin hypervisor compared to the full ESX version, and has been designed to provide a smaller footprint to both simplify adoption of virtualization as well as increase security of the platform.
Mental Ward: VMware Lands New COO

VMware has a new Chief Operating Officer. The company announced yesterday that Tod Nielson, a software industry veteran with more than 20 years experience, becomes the new COO.

What happened to the old COO? Nothing -- it's a newly-created position. It seems a little odd to me that a company the size of VMware didn't have a COO before this.

VMware Fights Fire with Fire

VMware has imported another ex-Microsoft veteran to fight Microsoft, its worst enemy. This time it’s Tod Nielsen plucked out of Borland, where he’s been CEO for the last three years, to be VMware’s chief operating officer, a specially created job that reports to fellow Microsoft veteran, VMware CEO Paul Maritz.

VMware, SpringSource Link Arms On Development

It's getting more common to see a proprietary company partner with an open source one, but even so, the alliance of SpringSource and VMware is notable. Each is a leader in its field, and their ability to work together is a boost for both.

SpringSource supplies a tool suite, which developers use with the Spring Framework to simplify building Java applications. SpringSource and VMware are integrating use of the tools with VMware Workstation, which will allow Spring users to generate virtual machines in which to test drive their applications.
